TALON - FLEX OPTION FAN FOR LIFE
GSC/GSU backgWilly Fritz installed the Shotgun OPtion round in football
I was at GSC when Erk Russell first arrived at Southern in 1981. Amazing he took the job at Southern because we had nothing> he started the program with walk-on players and played the first years as a club team in until 1984. I really didn't know how warn down the school was because I never visited other campuses. Football was one of the best things to ever happen to Southern. I know most of you know about the Southern program and the offense under Erk. Paul Johnson took over as Offensive coordinator in 1985, installed the Flex Option and added a basic Run & Shoot package to the regular routs and play action passing attack.
GSUs Problem - the AD and consistency.
GSU has had some very good Flex Option Head Coaches, staff and players in the past. ERk was in every playoff game from 85-99, played for 4 National Championships, won 3 going 15-0 in his last year and winning *@% of his FCS games. Head Coach Paul Jonson won 86% of his FCS games. The rest of our HCs were in the 72% region.
Our AD then decided to Higher Brian Vangoider from the NFL and he lasted on year using a different offensive system. Our AD then highers Hatcher a passing bubble screen system & he was gone in 3 years.WE then hired Jeff Monken, now Army's HC but he righted the GSU ship.
GSU's The Shotgun Option
After Monken left for Army Willy Fritz was brought on as HC and installed the Shotgun Option.. To my surprise he did a great job the first to years in FBS. He left GSU after 2 years. GSU then went through 2 years of the Shotgun Option under 3 different Head Coach and did very poorly. In 2018-19 under a new Shotgun HC we have made a comeback of sorts.
If we do not meet GSU expectations in the next 2 years I truly hope GSU's new AD returns to the Flex or as Paul Johnson called it Spread Triple Option.
It ALWAYS WORKED AT GSU AND I THINK IT WOULD BE EASIER TO RECRUIT FOR THAN THE SHOTGUN OPTION!
