***Newbie here*** We are adopting the flexbone and are in the process of getting everything organized for spring practice. My question for you experienced guys is how do y’all organize/name your offense as far as play names? Do y’all use numbers (12/13) or verbalize it (veer right/veer left or code words)? I grew up in a number system in high school but have been verbal ever since, so I have experience with both. Obviously there are a million ways to do this. Just trying to explore all options and figure out the way which is best for us.
Thanks!

We use numbers
12/13 Inside Veer right/Left 10/11 Mid-double 30/31 Mid-triple 58/59 Toss 22/23 Zone Dive 20/21 Trap 6/7 Belly G 26/27 Zone Option
Have a good friend that uses heavy machinery names for his play calls
Truck Tonka Dump Truck Dozer Train Tractor
I think you can do it how you wish or what's best for your kids

Traditionally how are the "series" organized? This is a question I've always had. For clarification on my question: I know that 12 is inside veer to the right because the second number is 2 which designates direction/hole number, but what/how are the series numbers (the 1 in 12, 2 in 23, etc.) determined? Im probably over thinking it but I like to be organized!
Thanks

In my mind, Paul Johnson Flex numbering is not "series" based, a la Wing-T. This is the numbering system many people use...sort of the common language.
If you want to speak the same language, the is probably the route I would go. If you are going to use something different, basically requires you to be BI-LINGUAL in order to communicate with most Flex guys. (This is what I have to do.) Of course, many times we just say IV, ML3, OV, etc. so no numbers required to talk.
Unfortunately for me, 20 years ago, I moved into a Wing-T offense and began to ADD option game to it. I became accustomed to numbering by series, so my system is organized that way now.
0-9 : QB runs (ie. - Zone Option is 6-7) 10's: FB runs (ie. - Zone Dive is 12-13) 20's: Double Options (ie. - Midline Double is 20-21) 30's: Triple Options (ie. - Inside Veer is 32-33) 40's: Counters (ie. - IV Sally is 42-43) 50's: Rocket...58-59 has been the only thing in this series for a long time 80's: Sprint-Out Pass 90's: Three-step Pass (now DASH series)
Three-digits is play-action pass.
If I had the OPTION and could go back, I would go with the COMMON language. My opinion.
Best of luck to you, Coach.
